Map of Canada

During this lab session, I was tasked to create a black and white map of Canada. As this was one of the first maps we would be making, the lab session focused on familiarizing us with Adobe Illustrator and different map elements to include.

The base map was from ArcGIS and I changed the projection to a conic projection before exporting it to Adobe Illustrator for map design.

As it is a black and white map, visual hierarchy was very important to ensure that different details stand out at different extents to the map users. This included fading out the non-Canadian territories, including a 'halo' around the text to add in visibility and fading out the country boundaries. I also learnt how to add important map elements such as the North arrow, scale bar and map legend to create a complete map.
